Sharpening the Focus of Your Cover Letter:
Avoid the Kitchen Sink Approach
Note that this middle paragraph -- the "kitchen sink" paragraph -- in the writer's cover letter describes at least five different skills.
Not only should the writer have split the paragraph into two or three smaller ones, but she also should expand on how these skills qualify her for the job she seeks:
-
I also have vast knowledge of the Latin culture. Since I was born
and raised in a Latin American country, it is very easy for me to
relate and understand the needs of other countries. I am hard
working, independent and reliable, a combination that is not
easily found in many individuals. While a member of the varsity
tennis team, I demonstrated strong leadership skills that I will
put to work towards the benefit of your company. My coach Samie
Riley, as well as many of my professors, can testify this fact.
I possess extensive knowledge about computers and software programs
like Word, WordPerfect, Excel, Access, and others, which will allow
me to deal with modern business techniques in a dynamic environment.
I am detail-oriented; I could deal with much information and still
find the pertinent facts of the matter.
