Don't Convey Any Unnecessarily Negative Information: How to Avoid Signaling Weakness
Inexperienced job-seekers sometimes feel they must reveal every detail about their background -- and even point out their weaknesses.
Notice how the opening clause in the following example adds nothing to the sentence and in fact totally weakens it:
-
Although I have not had the opportunity to gain a wide variety of experience in
finance, I have gained general experience in my field through internships and
stock-trading simulations.
If you simply eliminate that initial negative clause, you strengthen the statement enormously, yet you are still 100 percent honest:
-
I have gained general experience in my field through internships and
stock-trading simulations.
