    Page 21: Examples

    Cover Letter Openers:

    More risky openers.

The type of field you're entering can make a big difference in the degree of risk in your opener. The following example is a bit risky, but less so than the previous one because of the artistic, creative nature of the field:

      Dear Mr. Sennett:
Call off the search; you have found what you are looking for! A fresh mind eager to become a productive part of Scenic World's creative team. I am an artistically inclined student at Emerson College, looking to combine my painting and drawing talents with making profits for a business like yours.

Similarly, the next risky opener would probably work because of the freewheeling nature of the sport of surfing:

      Dear Ms. Bouvier:
Surf's up! Not only are the waves clean and glassy, but you are holding in your hands a promising resume. Look no further because I am the perfect person for your sales position.

How to test whether your opener is too risky? Since the degree of risk you can get away with is directly related to the field you seek to enter, your best bet is to show your letter to someone in that field. Someone already in the kind of job you seek is the best judge of how much risk you can take with your letter.
