Q-Tips: Quick and Quintessential Tips to Guide Your Job Search and Work Life

Job-hunting tips from the March 14, 2011, issue of QuintZine.

Ford Myers of Career Potential recently published Tips for a Successful Job Search by Amy Dinning, a huge list of helpful bullet points for job-seekers.

Here are just a few of her tips:
  • Create and utilize a career transition binder.
  • Have a "Personal Board of Directors."
  • Create a networking newsletter to e-mail quarterly, if not more often.
  • Attend different networking meetings and events, and continually add new ones to your schedule.
  • Treat every event you go to or participate in as networking.
  • Create a Linked-In profile -- ask people to submit recommendations for your work; answer questions; update your status.
  • Compile and continually update a Target Company List.

JobHuntChat, which recently celebrated its first anniversary, has generated more than 250,000 tweets. Every Monday night at 10 pm EST, Jessica Miller Merrell and Rich DeMatteo tweet six questions submitted by job-seekers and call on the Twitter community to help answer their questions.

With Job Hunt Chat, known under the hash tag as #jobhuntchat job-seekers can meet other job seekers, potential employers, and HR recruiters to help them network and answer pertinent questions they may have about their job search.

If you're uncomfortable with the idea of an Elevator Speech for networking, you will appreciate a new approach that career expert Mary Jeanne Vincent wrote about recently. The technique, developed by a colleague of Vincent's, is a "networking brief," a sheet with a set of talking points for structuring a networking conversation or information interview. Common categories in the brief, "include a profile or summary of qualifications, positions of interest, types of target organizations, key achievements, experience, education and, of course, your contact information," Vincent writes.
