Job Interviewing Tutorial for High School Students,
Teen and Entry-Level Job-Seekers

Bad nonverbals to avoid in the interview.

avoiding pause words in job interview

While not truly a nonverbal behavior, pause words -- such as like, you know, um, uh, ah -- are to be avoided. The best way to remove them from your interview responses is to practice -- and practice some more.

Other nonverbal behaviors to avoid:

  • Chewing gum
  •

  • Wringing your hands, or constantly moving them around
  •

  • Fidgeting in your chair
  •

  • Playing with your hair, touching your face
  •

  • Excessive sweating

It takes some practice, but you can learn to avoid BAD nonverbal behaviors.
