Resume Lite Tutorial for Job-Seekers:
How to Edit and Polish Your Job-Search Resume

Tips for Getting Started on Your Job-Search Resume

Brainstorm about your key experiences and accomplishments -- in actual work experiences as well as volunteering.

Develop an outline of major headings:

  • Identification: Name, Phone, Email, City, State
  • Qualifications Summary/Headline/Branding Statement
  • Experience
    • Job Title
    • Company, location (city, state)
    • Dates of employment
    • Key accomplishments
  • Education
    • Degree, major, minors
    • Educational institution, location (city, state)
    • Honors and awards
    • GPA? (overall vs. in major)
  • Other headings, if necessary

Education or experience first? For students (undergraduate or graduate), education goes first; for job-seekers, experience comes first.

Edit, edit, edit -- work on polishing your resume into a cohesive marketing document.

Solicit others -- colleagues, mentors, professors, friends -- to review/critique your resume.
