Now that the holidays have arrived, workplaces around the country are planning holiday parties. Quintessential Careers offers advice to workers for surviving — and thriving at — holiday work parties.

Not only did he become the hot item on the company’s gossip grapevine, but a few days later he found himself without a job.

“The most important thing for workers to remember is that no matter where the event is held, a company-sponsored holiday party is 100-percent a workplace event — meaning that it is a work event, not a social one,” says Career Expert Randall Hansen, publisher of leading career resources site, Quintessential Careers (

“Even if the event is just co-workers — no bosses — a holiday party is not the place to blow off steam about your problems with the organization or the people that work there,” says Hansen. “You don’t want to be the focus of the grapevine or find a video of your rant on Facebook or YouTube.”

Hansen suggests that all workers should attend their workplace holiday parties, dress appropriately, do everything in moderation, network and mingle with co-workers, show gratitude to the bosses and party-planners… and try and have some fun.

  • Do keep all conversations positive and upbeat.
  • Don’t spend the evening complaining, bragging, correcting, whining, or ridiculing. And do avoid controversial subjects (such as religion, politics, etc.) and off-color jokes.
  • Don’t monopolize conversations — and, especially, don’t talk about yourself or your accomplishments all night.
  • Do be gracious and thank coworkers and team members for all their help and hard work during the past year. And don’t even think about gossiping about others.
