  • College Planning Tutorial:
    Course Type & Load

Your goal in high school should be to take as many advanced college-prep courses as you can handle.

College admissions officers love students who take on challenges -- and one of the areas in which you can show this trait is with the choices you make in your selection of courses during your high school years.

Advanced courses -- Advanced Placement (AP), Honors, and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses -- in which students often perform college-level work are seen as an indicator of your ability to succeed in college.

Your Goal? You certainly do not need to enroll in an International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at your high school (unless that program suits you well), but where you have the strengths, skills, and aptitude, you should at least strive for Honors or Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Need help with any of the terms described on this page? If so, find the answers in our High School College-Bound and College Planning Glossary.
