Completing College Applications Successfully
Remember that the application is your one shot at impressing the admissions staff.
Most college applications have similar sections and want basically the same information -- but you'll need to carefully read the instructions on each form before completing it online or in print by hand or using a typewriter.
Here are some tips for completing your college applications successfully:
- Read the directions thoroughly (maybe even a couple of times) before you even print your name.
- Make copies of all print applications before starting so that if you make a mistake, you have a clean copy of the application.
- Take your time in completing the application. Demonstrate your best work.
- Essays should be error-free, thoughtful, logical and organized. (More on these important elements of your application later in this tutorial.)
- Use specific examples when describing your interests and achievements. Explain your involvement.
- Typing or printing is acceptable. One advantage of online applications is the simple keystroking of information. If completing by hand, remember that neatness and legibility are important.
- Proofread extremely carefully. Spelling errors are unacceptable.
- Ask someone else to also proofread your application -- that's how seriously you should take this process.
- Photo copies (clear ones) are perfectly acceptable, but sign each one individually.
- Remember to proofread one last time before submitting.
