Of all the criteria colleges use to evaluate your application, class rank/standing is the one that has lost some importance.Class rank and class standing have lost some of their relevance in the admissions process, partly because class rank means almost nothing in high schools that are at the extremes – horrible or exceptional. In some of the top high school programs, class rank has been found to actually hurt some of the very best students – because only so many can be in the top 1, 5, or even 10 percent of the class. Your Goal? Grades obviously drive class rank, so you should of course strive for the very best grades -- and then just hope that the ranking works in your favor or that the colleges you apply to don’t use rank as a top criteria for admissions.
