  • College Planning Tutorial:
    Application Forms

Once you have narrowed your list to your top colleges, the next big decision is which application to use.

Many colleges -- at least about 300 of them -- allow applicants to make a choice of completing the school's application or the Common Application.

Admissions folks at colleges that utilize the common application make no distinction between applicants that complete the school's application and those that use the Common Application.

The Common Application is managed by the non-profit Common Application organization, and students can apply online or use the print version -- allowing you to spend less time on the busywork of completing multiple admission application forms, and more time on other elements of college-planning. Note that for many schools, you may have to submit supplemental materials in addition to the common application.

Thus, it really comes down to your preferences for those schools that accept both application methods.
