    Application Fees

One thing to keep in mind as you decide which college to apply to is that each charges an application fee.

While application fees are not outrageously expensive -- the vast majority are under $50 -- the amounts add up quickly if you have a large number of schools.

(About 10 percent of colleges have no application fee.)

Fees can typically be paid by check or credit card.

What can you do if you can't afford the fees?

You may have already received a fee waivers for the SAT or ACT. If not, your high school guidance counselor can help you obtain these waivers. If you qualify for an SAT fee waiver, you can use that same waiver to waive admission application fees at up to six participating colleges. (Learn more about the SAT Fee Waiver Program.)

Most colleges have their own application fee waiver programs and policies, even if they participate in the SAT fee waiver program. Some colleges have special forms. Others request that you submit a personal letter. Check with each college's admissions office.

Need help with any of the terms described on this page? If so, find the answers in our High School College-Bound and College Planning Glossary.
