Cold-contacting employers to explore unadvertised positions or propose that the employer create a position that doesn't currently exist is an underused and highly effective technique. (See our article Cold Calling: A Time-Tested Method of Job-Hunting.)

Once you've initiated this cold-contact technique, you may want to follow up with a letter like the one below, which serves as a template with a suggested structure.

  • The adaptability and solution-driven mindset that enables me to delve into complex projects, react to changing priorities, and deliver on project initiatives.
  • The management savvy to envision the big picture while guiding projects, along with the organizational skills to handle the smaller details.

I would very much like to share my ideas with you on how your [company or organization] could benefit from a [name of position] like me. I will contact you soon to arrange for a discussion. Feel free also to reach me using the contact information listed above.
