Career Branding Tutorial:
Take Your Career to the Next Level

Creating Your Brand Positioning Statement

Remember: A personal positioning statement should identify the one or two things that make the job-seeker unique and valuable to the employer.

So... how do you develop a personal positioning statement?

Make as long a list as possible as you answer these questions for the development of your brand positioning statement:
  1. What is it that makes you different?
  2. What qualities or characteristics make you distinctive?
  3. What have you accomplished?
  4. What is your most noteworthy personal trait?
  5. What benefits (problems solved) do you offer?

Michael Goodman writes in The Potato Chip Difference (read our review of the book) about the three guidelines for creating a brand positioning statement:
  • needs to be truthful and accurate -- with no exaggerations
  • should focus on critical benefit to employer -- a void you can fill
  • should be unique and compelling feature that only you can deliver
