U.S. employers added more jobs in December and ended 2006 on a strong note.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 167,000 jobs were added in December,
helping keep the unemployment rate steady at a still historically low 4.5 percent.
The number of new jobs added to the economy last month exceeded analysts' forecasts
(they were expecting a gain of only around 115,000), and was the best showing since this past September.
Jobs gains were seen in education and health care, business services, financial firms, and leisure
and hospitality, while construction, manufacturing and retail experineced job losses.
For all of 2006, the nation's unemployment rate dropped to a six-year low of 4.6
percent as the economy added 1.8 million jobs. However, with the economy slowing,
analysts predict the jobless rate this year will climb to
around 4.9 percent. In 2005, the unemployment rate averaged 5.1 percent.
