U.S. employers added more employees in February, but unemployment edged upward. Wages grew.
Employers added a stronger-than-forecast 243,000 jobs in February, according to the Labor Department.
Experts had predicted 210,000 jobs would be added last month. Construction, retail, financial services,
healthcare, and education were among the industries seeing job gains.
Meanwhile, the unemployment report, generated by a separate survey, rose to 4.8 percent,
versus expectations for it to hold steady at 4.7 percent.
Finally, average hourly earnings grew 0.3 percent during February, in line with expectations,
but in the 12 months through February pay rose by 3.5 percent, which Labor Department
officials said was the highest annual increase since September 2001.
