U.S. unemployment fell to its lowest level in 4 and 1/2 years last month.
According to the Department of Labor, employers added 193,000 new
workers in January, a bit lower than the forecast of 240,000, but
much stronger than the disappointing 108,000 new jobs added in December.
In other labor news, the jobless rate unexpectedly dropped to 4.7 percent from
4.9 percent in December, the lowest level since July 2001. For Blacks, the rate fell
to 8.9 percents, while for Hispanics, the rate dipped to 5.8 percent.
Finally, a separate report showed U.S. companies planned more than 100,000
layoffs in January, down 4 percent from December, but 12 percent higher
than the January 2005 level.
