For many college students, choosing a career may be a logical first step toward choosing a major; for others, choosing a career first amounts to putting the cart before the horse. Whether you decide on a career before or after choosing a major, many Internet sources can help you choose your major. Remember, your school’s career counselor or your academic adviser may be the best resource in deciding on a major.

Our article, Choosing a College Major: How to Chart Your Ideal Path takes you through the steps of a journey of self-discovery leading to a choice of major(s) and possible minors.

Our section, What Can I do With a Major in...?, provides you with real job titles and careers for students who major in just about any major -- including majors in the arts, business, history, science, and social science.

The 10-Step Career Planning Guide, Canadian site, is particularly well-suited for high-school and lower-level college students. This career-exploration guide is especially comprehensive, covering exploration of values, interests, skills, learning style, and personality. It also guides users in researching careers in which they are interested and developing action steps for short- and long-term career planning. The later research-oriented steps are much better suited for Canadian users than Americans, but they are still helpful to all. The 10-Step guide is best completed in several sittings, but a very nice feature is the fact that the site will "remember" and store what you've already done, so you can simply pick up where you left off the next time you go back. Registration required.

What Can I do With a Major in...?, from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, offers some great resources, including career titles by major and links to major/career-specific Websites. Limited only by the majors offered by the school.

Major Resource Kits, from the Career Service Center at the University of Delaware, is a large collection of "kits" on a wide range of majors. Each kit includes a short description of the major, career paths, sample job titles, and a short bibliography of print and Web-based resource materials.
