Notes from the Editor: About this Issue...
We've done a college-bound issue each of the eight years of QuintZine's
existence. We're delighted this year to bring you an article by and a Q&A
with Chandlee Bryan, who has launched a career practice, Careers in Context,
(http://www.careersincontext.com/) in New York City, specializing in career
counseling and resume-writing for new grads and entry-level job-seekers.
Chandlee, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at a conference this spring,
has written an outstanding article about the connection between choosing a
career and choosing a college, busting some of the myths about this
integration and the role of the college career office. She further explores
these issues and more in her Q&A.
And Dr. Randall Hansen brings you a great set of do's and don'ts for finding, applying for, and maintaining
scholarships to help finance the ever-increasing cost of a college
education.
Earlier this year, we put out a special issue about coping with the recession. In light of the recent financial meltdown, we will put out
another special issue. Watch for it in a couple of weeks.

Feature Article: On-Campus Job-Search Myths
On College and Career: What to Expect from Your College or University
by E. Chandlee Bryan
If your interests are similar to the majority of incoming college students over the past 40 years, one of the
key factors in your decision to attend college is the ability to land a "good job" after graduation, according to a
UCLA Survey. A majority of U.S. colleges and universities offer career services to students; these offices
generally provide comprehensive services that are designed to help you apply for positions and prepare for
interviews. They also offer you access to databases of internship and full-time positions to which you may apply. In
our full article we examine three
myths of the on-campus job search and provide you with tips on how to make
the most out of your campus career office.

A weak economy and job market makes it even more essential to have a strong resume that
helps open doors to new job and career opportunities.

successfully helped tens of thousands of clients, from executives through individuals beginning a career,
succeed in their career goals.
Most college-bound high-school students and current college students know the hard facts about college -- both good and bad.
The good: Studies show college graduates have much higher lifetime earnings and lead healthier and longer lives than those
who do not attend college. Furthermore, many of the 21st century jobs and jobs of the future require a minimum of a college education.
The bad: While politicians talk about making college more affordable, the reality is that college is a big and expensive investment.
Worse, college costs keep rising -- much faster than inflation -- with no end in sight. The average annual cost of college in the U.S.
is now around $30,000 (though at many public colleges and universities costs, especially for in-state residents, are much cheaper).
While the rising cost of college may discourage you, a source of money is out there -- actually thousands of sources totaling
billions of dollars -- that college students can tap into to help pay for college... money you
never have to pay back. That source? It's scholarships, of course. (Depending on the college you attend, you may still
need some student loans, but finding scholarships to pay for as much of your college education as
possible should certainly be your first strategy.)
QuintZine's Q&A with Career Expert:
E. Chandlee Bryan
E. Chandlee Bryan, certified professional resume writer and career counselor at Careers in Context.
"Career choice should play a role in the college decision-making process,"
said Chandlee Bryan in the Q&A interview we did with her, "but it should
never be viewed as the only determining factor in selecting the school
that's right for you and your family." Bryan went on to list three
recommendations for integrating career choice and college choice.
Bryan also revealed whether it's OK to enter college with no idea of what
career or major to pursue and when those decisions should be made.
Read more of Bryan's advice, including her thoughts on the promising internship scene (despite a weak economy),
her cautions about spending too much job-hunting time on the Internet, and her advice on keeping a job search simple, in

Total federal funding for higher education is lower now than it was three years ago, reports April Hall in HRLeaders.com
Weekly Bulletin. Students are watching rising costs and falling financial help. What happens after
graduation? Do they have to go for a bigger salary to pay loans and skip the tradition of starting at the bottom to work
their way up in a big company?..."(Our) biggest challenge is effectively marketing retail
positions to graduates and the parents who paid the bills," said Sheldon Jones, a spokesman for Verizon Wireless.
He said it's important for the company to educate employees on benefits and to stay competitive by adding
state-of-the-art health and wellness centers. The services there run the gamut from massages to a private place for new,
nursing mothers.
At Wawa Inc., "roughly 50 percent of (entry-level positions at the corporate level) are filled by store associates," said
Ed Iames, director of people development. While Wawa has name recognition as an employer in its
region, finds it needs to educate the community that there is more to the company than simply working at the store level. ...
He said the company recently started a pilot program to help employees repay their college
tuitions to attract qualified new graduates. The company also offers tuition reimbursement to employees who want to
continue their education after coming to the company.
While tuition reimbursement may be a rather traditional benefit, more companies may look into Wawa's repayment
program as expenses soar and funding becomes increasingly scarce. Today's graduates will surely look for
their employers to bring something to the table to make all of their tuition bills worthwhile. SOURCE: HRLeaders.com
