    Feature Article: Working Abroad Tutorial
Working Abroad Tutorial: How to Find an International Job or Internship

    by Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D.

Our no-cost tutorial is about helping students and recent grads finding employment -- internships or jobs -- overseas.

People have all sorts of reasons for working internationally, ranging from wanting to make a difference in an underdeveloped part of the world to gaining the international experience necessary to move up the corporate ladder.

In the past, when people talked about working abroad, it was more typically in volunteering or other low-paid positions, but increasingly, students and recent grads are seeking out internships and paid positions to gain traction for their futures.

The Working Abroad Tutorial is designed for all students -- whatever your reasons -- to assist in finding employment overseas.

Special Feature: Global Do's and Don'ts
    Global Job-Search Do’s and Don’ts

    by Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D.

More and more job-seekers are realizing the many benefits of gaining international work experience -- both personally and professionally. You can gain global work at any stage of your career, though it is often easier to find full-time employment once you have at least several years of experience domestically. College students and recent grads, however, can also find a variety of international experiences.

What are the keys to successfully finding an overseas job or internship? Our global job-serarch do's and don'ts provide some straightforward tips and suggestions for achieving your goals in your global job-search.

    Bonus Feature: Myths and Mistakes
Myths and Mistakes of International Job-Hunting

by Ronald L. Krannich, Ph.D. and Wendy Enelow

Editor's note: This article is an excerpt from Krannich and Enlow's book, Best Resumes And CVs For International Jobs: Your Passport to the Global Job Market. Impact Publications.

Much of international job-searching and resume writing is centered in a series of myths and mistakes that take job-seekers down a long and frustrating path where they encounter many failures and lost opportunities. Many of the myths and mistakes are generic to the job search process while others are peculiar to international job-seekers who operate in a very different employment arena than their domestic cousins.

We've frequently encountered the myths and realities described in this article with international job-seekers who mean well but misunderstand how the job market operates.

    QuintZine's Q&A with Expert: C. Perry Yeatman
    C. Perry Yeatman, co-author of Get Ahead by Going Abroad: A Woman's Guide to Fast-Track Career Success.

For anyone aspiring to reach the upper ranks of a large, multinational company, "developing a global perspective will be critical," said C. Perry Yeatman in the Q&A interview we did with her. "Even if someone has ambitions to lead a smaller organization, given the global nature of supply chains these days, that organization will very likely get supplies from or have customers in markets outside their own. So, regardless of your

industry, if you want to get ahead, you are probably going to have to learn to compete and win in markets around the world. The best way to do that is by working overseas."

Read more of Yeatman's thoughts, including her take on the hardest aspects of working abroad, her advice on getting started with international work experience, tips on balancing work and family, and ideas for uncovering job leads in our full Q&A interview with her.

    2. Teachers
    3. Mechanics
    4. Technicians

If you wanted to launch a targeted cold e-mail campaign in which you sent your resume to employers, what would be the best day to do it? Steven Rothberg of CollegeRecruiter.com recently reported his findings for the opposite kind of campaign -- a targeted campaign to job-seekers. He noted that the best day and time were Wednesday afternoons, followed by Mondays. He observes that what works for some clients doesn't work for others. But could it be that Wednesday afternoons are the best time to target employers? Try it and see, but follow Rothberg's advice to keep experimenting to find the time you get the best response from employers.

Friday, February 1, 2008, marks the kick-off of Job Shadowing 2008. Starting on that day, countless working professionals will see their "student shadows" as part of Job Shadowing 2008. Now in its 11th year, this year-round effort engages thousands of employers in an initiative that introduces an estimated million students to the world of work over the next 12 months.

Job shadowing enriches the lives of students by acquainting them with the world of work through on-the-job experiences and a carefully crafted school curriculum that ties academics to the workplace. The effort helps young people understand how what they learn in the classroom leads to success in the workplace. National job shadowing is a coordinated effort of Junior Achievement, America's Promise - The Alliance for Youth, the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Labor. National partners include the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE). For more information, visit Job Shadow 2008.
