    Volume 03, Issue 10 ISSN: 1528-9443 May 13, 2002
    Editor's Note: Younger Job-Seekers Issue
It's almost summer, and e-mail pleas from teenagers seeking summer jobs are hitting our mailboxes.

This issue offers guidance to teens seeking jobs, especially in terms of interviewing strategies. Our two-part article on interviewing uses many real-life examples to give young people the lowdown on succeeding in interviews.

So come on, teens, let's get out there and hit the bricks! And, parents...be sure your teen son or daughter sees this issue.

For our other readers -- and for teens who want to know what the future holds -- we present a very interesting article on 21st century career success.

    --Katharine Hansen, editor at kathy@quintcareers.com

Feature Article: Interview Preparation for Teens
Job Interview Strategies for Teens: Part I -- Interview Preparation

    by Katharine Hansen

As much as you'd like to be earning some money, the idea of job-hunting can be pretty intimidating. If you're feeling shy and lacking confidence about getting out there and talking to employers, you are far from alone, according to many career counselors.

"Many of the students I counsel are so nervous during an interview that they come across as a bit withdrawn, which may translate into lacking self-confidence or lacking interest and enthusiasm for the position," observes Lisette Ruiz, a career counselor. Our two-part article offers tips to help you cruise through job interviews confidently and land the job with flying colors.

Bonus Feature: The Look of Career Success
What Will 21st Century Career Success Look Like?

    by Michelle L. Casto, M.Ed.

When it comes to modern career development, one thing we can all count on is change. With the advent of technology, telecommuting, and e-commerce, how work is performed is in a state of reinvention. Self-employment and small business development will become more the norm than big business. And career changes will be more frequent because of rapidly changing organizations and industries. Finally, the line between one's personal and professional life will become even more blurred. Since the modern world of work is rapidly changing to keep up with the demands of our fast-paced lives and lifestyles, this article examines some characteristics of what the new work contract will look like and offers advice on successfully navigating through the turbulent times of change and career uncertainty.

The Career Doctor Answers Your Questions
Got a career question? The Career Doctor is holding office hours!

Jen writes: "I am 16 years old. I love your ideas besides babysitting. [Editor's note: See our article, Job Ideas for Teens 15 and Younger: Beyond Babysitting.] I love cooking and I am actually quite good at it. I cook at home and I also have a class in school that I am doing well in. I was wondering if you could e-mail as soon as possible and tell me some things I should put on my flyer."

Career Doctor Randall S. Hansen responds to the question.

Mike Foley writes: "I am 19, turning 20 on June 22. My problem is I still don't know what I want to do with my life. I would be interested to know if you hear that a lot. Also I am interested to know if there are any career opportunities out there that don't require a post-secondary education."

See what the Career Doctor has to say.

Alessandra Arias writes: "I have a fairly easy and general question for you. I am currently a student and am thinking about switching majors. I am not really sure what I want to do. I was thinking about majoring in journalism. With that major, what jobs can I look into and what fields would be available to me?"

    See the Career Doctor's opinion.

Jeremiah DeLlamas writes: "I've got a question regarding portfolios. It will take a folder with nice plastic dividers to make it look really nice. It is something that I do not want to make and just give to a interviewer. Do I need to make plenty of them to leave with interviewers, or what do I do with it?"

Q TIPS: Quick and Quintessential Career & Job Tips
JuniorJobs.com and Youth Venture have announced a new "Dream it. Do it." partnership to promote social entrepreneurship among youth ages 13-20. Together these organizations will provide opportunities for job-seeking teenagers to become Youth Venturers and launch clubs, organizations, or businesses that benefit their communities. This partnership will offer youth the support they need to create, lead and launch their own enterprise, including materials, technical allies, media opportunities, national recognition, workshops, trainings, a Venturers-only Web site, and up to $1,000 in start-up seed money.

Last year, Youth Venture launched 130 venture teams all over the country. Sonia, aged 17 of Springfield, VA, for example, launched Ayudemonos (''Let's Help Each Other''). Her venture promotes organ donation awareness throughout the Latino community in Northern Virginia. The teenage founder of Juniorjobs, 17-year-old Saied Ghaffari, helped develop the partnership to enable the thousands of teens who come to juniorjobs.com the opportunity to follow his example.

Junior Jobs is an on-line job-hunting site especially designed for teenagers. Teens can not only search for jobs, but also have access to resources that help them prepare for their career. Youth Venture is a national not-for-profit organization that invests in young people as changemakers by providing the tools and support they need to create, lead, and launch organizations, clubs, or businesses ("ventures") that make a difference in the community. For more on the partnership go to Junior Jobs and click on Dream it. Do it.

This June 14 is National Work @ Home Father's Day. Held each year on the Friday before Father's Day, it is the one day set aside to honor and celebrate those working fathers who have elected to work from home -- either as home-based entrepreneurs or teleworkers -- as a means to improve family interaction, professional satisfaction -- and balance between the two. Now in its second year, the event features the contest, "Why I Work @ Home: A Dad's View." To enter, work-at-home dads must submit a 250-word essay on how working from home has improved the balance between their family and professional lives. The prize package is valued at more than $250.

To enter "Why I Work@Home: A Father's View," entrants must be fathers with at least one in-home, minor child, and must work or telework from a home office at least one day each week. Submit entries to Work @ Home Father's Day Essay Contest, P.O. Box 8263 Coral Springs, FL 33075-8263, or contest@fathersworld.com. Entries must be postmarked or emailed no later than June 1, 2002. Winners will be announced on June 14. For complete rules, visit Father's World.

In recent years, the number of e-mentoring programs has grown as providers have sought new ways to connect young people with mentors. Because such programs offer great flexibility by eliminating time and geographic barriers, they have the potential for tapping a whole new pool of mentors. At the same time, they present new challenges regarding safety and effectiveness.

With a grant received last year, The National Mentoring Partnership is providing a national clearinghouse that offers guidelines for responsible mentoring via the Internet, how-to information, consultation and technical assistance for providers wishing to establish or expand e-mentoring programs, as well opportunities for young people to locate mentors and prospective mentors to locate young people to mentor.
