Editor's Note: International Issue, Search Enhanced
In conjunction with QuintZine's recent vacation in Italy,
we bring you our International Issue. We've detected considerable
interest among our readership in global opportunities, and we also
have a significant non-American readership. Hope everyone can find
something of interest in this issue.
NEW SEARCH CAPABILITIES
We've recently teamed up with Atomz.com to provide expanded
search capabilities for Quintessential Careers and QuintZine.
You can choose to do a simple keyword search or a more expanded
advanced search. When you're in a hurry to find something
at our site, please go to our search page.
"For the culturally incompetent," writes Sarah Histed-Shergill,
"the global job market provides a wealth of opportunity
. . . to be misconstrued, misunderstood and misinterpreted."
"You must prepare your resume with an international perspective," she
writes. "By
presenting your personal information in a culturally sensitive manner, you will enhance your chances of success in the
global job market."
Find out in Histed-Shergill's article how to follow some
simple steps to avoid the pitfalls of cultural faux-pas
and prevent potentially embarrassing and costly miscues.

The Career Doctor reaches into his archives for a
question that aligns with our international theme:
A job-seeker wants to know how foreign-language study
can be used in her career.
Christine writes: "I am thinking of taking up languages
for a master's (my degree is in communication), and am
thinking of doing it in the US. What are the career opportunities
should I study to speak say French, German, Russian, Mandarin
and Japanese (I am Asian)? Where can I get more info?"
Returning to the current batch of Career Doctor questions:

Two well-known career Web sites, CareerMosaic and Headhunter.net
have merged. CareerMosaic job seekers will now be directed to jobs
from the CareerMosaic site, as well as from its partnerships and alliances, including its largest relationship -- Yahoo!
If you're seeking work with a dot-com, be sure you ask
for the typically generous perks and compensation packages
that Internet companies are offering so they can compete
effectively in the tight labor market. According to a study
by K. Russo Associates for NewsAlert, Internet
company employees do not just benefit from stock options.
They also have an average of 12 days paid annual holidays,
good health plans and the chance to telecommute. All Internet
companies studied offered medical and dental coverage.
Three-quarters of employers paid the dental premiums
in full while 46 percent paid the medical premiums.
Other perks include paid maternity leave to new
mothers, paid paternity leave (sometimes), and paid childcare,
as well as subsidized health-club memberships
and a casual working environment, often replete
with pool tables and ping pong.
