Feature Article: Web-based Resume is Just One Tool
by Katharine Hansen
Writing in the online version of Computerworld magazine, freelance
writer Steve Alexander recently made the bold statement that "the
HTML resume, which comes complete with links and graphics, is a step
in the wrong direction for. . . job applicants."
Alexander never quite defines "HTML resume," but most people would define it as Web-based resume. It's a resume that resides on the Web,
and a Web-based resume can range from quite ordinary to very elaborate.
One of the pioneers of online jobhunting Web sites and the
darling of last year's Super Bowl advertising, Monster.com
has recently added some new features:
Customized information on your My Monster page keeps you up to date.
New & improved Resume Builder helps employers find you faster.
Multiple resume feature lets you create and store different versions of your resume.
Dynamic content delivery serves you articles that satisfy your interests.
More robust search agents deliver better results, so you spend less time searching.
Agent email notification option lets you decide how often you want
to receive agent e-mails with your search results.
You may choose to hide your entire resume from employers, hide your
contact information and your current employer, hide just your contact
information, or make your resume viewable for all employers to see.
Monster.com touts a new way to put your resume to work.
The new Resume Builder boasts faster employer matches,
a multiple resume feature, and the confidential resume
option. Your My Monster page will be customized with news
and articles, search tips, and special offers.
You can check out Monster.com's all-new Resume Builder

Q Tips: Quick and Quintessential Job Tips
How many people should you network with during your job search?
Kate Wendleton of the Five O'Clock Club, says the average job hunter meets with 60 people during the course of a search.
Interested in locating headhunters (executive recruiters)? Contact
the Recruiting & Search Report (904-235-3733) for its inexpensive directories covering 5,600 headhunters classified by
industry/functional specialty. Consultant News (603-585-2200)
publishes annual editions of The Directory of Executive Recruiters,
which is available in bookstores or from the publisher.
Consider joining Toastmasters to bolster your job search. This international
organization serves as far more than a venue for networking. The group helps people overcome the fear of public speaking and learn skills to
enhance success. It's especially good for those who are very shy about networking. Members of
Toastmasters receive constructive evaluation. It's an effective way to build
confidence while building your network. Toastmaster chapters are all over the
world (check you local newspaper or phone book for one near you), but if you
can't find a local branch, the Toastmasters
International Web page tells you how to start one.
