Editor's Note: About this Issue...
Happy Pi Day (3.14)! We've stuffed our QuintZine "pie" with tasty and nutritious filling!
We've produced nine "annual" reports on Internet job search since 2001 (the 2005 and 2008 reports
covered 18-month periods, so no reports for 2004 and 2007), and we're excited to bring you our latest,
which focuses on increasing personalization of both job search and recruiting. Two pieces accompany the
report: Jeff Dickey-Chasins' explanation of the .jobs controversy and a compilation of helpful tools and
resources published in the last year to aid your online job search.
Publisher Dr. Randall Hansen offers an eye-opening chart comparing effective and
ineffective job-search methods. He also continues our 15th-anniversary 15-tips series with 15 tips
for finding a job.
Speaking of the 15th anniversary of Quint Careers, see our announcement in this issue of the 15 Quintessential
Careers Career Masterminds helping us celebrate this landmark.
Please do enjoy at least a piece of the pie, if not the whole thing!

Feature Article: Job-Hunting Annual Report
The Era of Personalized Job Search and Recruiting: Extending the Conversation. A Quintessential Careers Annual Report 2011
by Katharine Hansen, Ph.D.
On the exact day that we published our 2010 Annual Report on Internet Job-Hunting, HR thought leader Dr. John Sullivan
was beginning to observe a trend that provides the framework for this year's report. Noting that "the practice of 1:1 or
personalized marketing is a well-established concept in customer relationship management circles, and is becoming more of a
mainstream practice thanks to many emerging technologies," Sullivan wrote in One-to-One Recruiting: The Importance of
Personalizing All Aspects of Recruiting: "Recruiting leaders need to examine every program and process to determine
how each can appear more personalized to candidates." The March 2010 article was the first of several he would
write between then and now on personalization in recruiting.
Some of that personalization relates to the depth with which employers and job-seekers can get to know each
other now. "Social media sites allow you to go beyond the traditional resume and gather information that can be beneficial
in accurate candidate assessment," Sullivan writes in another article. Sullivan's articles in the past year have been laced
with the concepts of "conversations" and "relationships" between candidates and hiring decision-makers -- enabled
by social media. "One of the most powerful capabilities of social media," he writes, for example, "is the fact that
it allows you to build close relationships and trust."
Against the backdrop of the personalized recruiting process and job search, we present the trends in Internet
job search over the last year in three major areas:
Have Your Resume Ready in Case of Job Loss in the Current Economic Climate.
QUINTESSENTIAL RESUMES AND COVER LETTERS, powered by About Jobs Resume Writing Service, provides solutions
with unmatched quality in the areas of professional resume writing. In fact, in 2009, during one of
the worst recessions in history, they still achieved a 98.7% effectiveness rate!
We realize that some folks learn better by example than by reading a long article, so we thought we
would show the contrast between a good -- or effective -- job-search and a weak job-search. If you desire more
information about what makes something good or weak, follow the links and learn more.
As part of the celebration of Quintessential Careers's 15th anniversary this year, we're presenting
lists of 15 tips on some of the most essential topics in college, job search, and career.
Unless you are one of the lucky few who works in a high-demand career, finding a new job can be
a challenging and frustrating experience. You can make the job search a bit easier on yourself
if you use proactive strategies for finding a new job -- and the tips included in this piece apply
to all job-seekers, from those just starting out to experienced folks who need a quick refresher.

Q TIPS:
Quick and Quintessential Tips to Guide Your Job Search and Work Life
Ford Myers of Career Potential recently published Tips for a Successful Job Search by Amy Dinning,
a huge list of helpful bullet points for job-seekers.
Here are just a few of her tips:
Create and utilize a career transition binder.
Have a "Personal Board of Directors."
Create a networking newsletter to e-mail quarterly, if not more often.
Attend different networking meetings and events, and continually add new ones to your schedule.
Treat every event you go to or participate in as networking.
Create a Linked-In profile -- ask people to submit recommendations for your work; answer questions; update your status.
Compile and continually update a Target Company List.
JobHuntChat, which recently celebrated its first anniversary, has generated more
than 250,000 tweets. Every Monday night at 10 pm EST, Jessica Miller Merrell and Rich DeMatteo tweet six questions
submitted by job-seekers and call on the Twitter community to help answer their questions.
With Job Hunt Chat, known under the hash tag as #jobhuntchat
job-seekers can meet other job seekers, potential employers, and HR recruiters
to help them network and answer pertinent questions they may have about their job search.
If you're uncomfortable with the idea of an Elevator Speech for networking, you will
appreciate a new approach that career expert Mary Jeanne Vincent wrote about recently.
The technique, developed by a colleague of Vincent's, is a "networking brief," a sheet with
a set of talking points for structuring a networking conversation or information interview.
Common categories in the brief, "include a profile or summary of qualifications, positions of interest,
types of target organizations, key achievements, experience, education and, of course, your
contact information," Vincent writes.
