Bookstore shelves are crammed with job-hunting books, but here's
one worth wedging in: A Foot in the Door: Networking Your Way Into the
Hidden Job Market by Katharine Hansen...With nearly half of the book
devoted to informational interviewing, it is a valuable guide to this
vital strategy.
Review on The Career Services Kiva Web site by Peter Vogt:
A Foot in the Door is one of the relatively few career books out there that actually takes the time to
describe why networking is so important to any person's job hunt (or career exploration). . .The book does an especially nice
job with that special form of networking known as informational
interviewing. Hansen wisely highlights the examples of real people --
including some college students -- who have successfully used informational interviewing in their
career development efforts...One unusual -- and quite innovative -- aspect of the book is that it doesn't rely solely on Hansen's
own thoughts and opinions. Instead, it incorporates the expertise of 123 career counselors and other professionals Hansen interviewed for the
project...If you or your students are interested in learning more about the whys, wheres,
whens, and hows of networking and informational interviewing, A Foot in the Door is a very good -- and highly readable -- investment.
Review on Amazon by Janet Scarborough from Seattle, WA USA:
An excellent resource for job seekers and career changers..., November 5, 2000
I'm a career counselor and I recommend this book all the time. Since most people who want to
change or advance their careers know that they are "supposed" to network but aren't sure where to
start, Katharine Hansen's book on career networking is very helpful because it provides so many concrete suggestions
about what to do. Rather than hunting all over the Internet or reading a dozen different books, purchasing this guide is definitely worth the investment.
From Sherry Mirshahi, a student at University of Maryland, College Park:
I would like to thank you so much for your book, A Foot In The Door. I have recommended this book
over and over again to so many of my friends and consider it a 'job hunting Bible.' The tips you give are
so wonderful! I appreciate that fact that this book has a lot of information in it that one really can't find elsewhere
in other books or even web sites. I feel much more assured about my future.
