College-Bound Students Must Focus on Differentiation
and What they Offer Prospective Colleges; New SAT Looms
(QUINTESSENTIAL CAREERS: DeLand, FL) -- The key to achieving success with
college applications is showcasing your accomplishments and highlighting what you'll
bring to the campus if accepted, noted Dr. Randall Hansen in announcing the Quintessential
Careers second annual report on college admissions. Quintessential
Careers is the comprehensive career-development Web site he founded eight years
ago this month. The site is dedicating November to an anniversary celebration packed with
special features and events.
“One of the biggest questions I get from high school students deals with how they can improve
their chances for admission to the college of their choice,” said Hansen, one of the nation’s
leading career experts, in a recent talk on the eve of the site’s anniversary. “And with our
second annual report on college admissions, we have some great advice from admissions
directors from colleges across the country.”
“At Stetson we review students on two levels. First, we want to know if the student has the
academic preparation to be successful here. We are not interested in recruiting just a
freshman class, we want to recruit students who will succeed, graduate, and go on to make
their mark in the world. Secondly, we want students who are a good fit for Stetson,” stated
Terry E. Whittum, Stetson University's Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, and one of
five admission deans interviewed for the eighth anniversary edition of
QuintZine, the Quintessential
Careers free biweekly electronic newsletter.
In addition to the second annual report on college admissions, the site is featuring an article
on six strategies for making a college application shine as well as a report on the new SAT
debuting in March 2005. “The article on making your application shine offers some great tips
for making the most of each application,” states Hansen, “while the SAT article is especially
important for high-school juniors because the test is going to change dramatically, focusing
more on measuring achievement rather than knowledge.
Beyond several new articles and the annaul report added for the site’s anniversary, visitors will find
more than 250 articles and tutorials on all aspects of job-hunting, from career exploration to
job offer negotiation included in the more than 2,000 pages that comprise the site. The site
also reviews and links to more than 1,400 job boards and company career centers, including
job sites in all industries and located in the U.S. and around the world. Visitors will also
find career information on writing cover letters and resumes, mastering job interviews, and
negotiating salaries. The QuintZine newsletter keeps subscribers current on college, career,
and job-hunting trends while listing all the latest additions to the site.
Throughout its seven years on the Web, Quintessential Careers has strived to be a job-seeker’s
one convenient source for virtually all career information -- from college to retirement, offering
expert advice on all aspects of job-hunting, including tips, resources, and examples to help
job-seekers write a stellar resume and cover letter; information to prepare for job interviews;
techniques for negotiating higher salaries; strategies for successfully changing careers; as
well as advice and resources for returning to college and/or attending graduate school.
In addition to teaching marketing at Stetson University and serving as Webmaster of
Quintessential Careers and publisher of QuintZine, Randall Hansen also writes a
weekly career advice column under the name The Career Doctor,
and is co-author of the cover letter bible, Dynamic Cover Letters, now in its third edition.
